No one has ever confused the Boys of Summer with football season, but NFL players have been hard at work during May and June and come mid July, training camps start to open.

There are currently nine Heisman Trophy winners on NFL rosters, including the newest league member, 2021 Heisman winner Bryce Young on the Carolina Panthers.

DeVonta Smith (2020) and Marcus Mariota (2014) are the only Heisman teammates this year, as Smith returns to Philadelphia as a starting receiver and Mariota is set to backup Heisman finalist Jalen Hurts at quarterback.

Joe Burrow (2019), now a grizzled fourth-year-vet-to-be in Cincinnati, is one of the top signal-callers in the game.

One-time Oklahoma teammates Kyler Murray (2018) and Baker Mayfield (2017) are facing new paths. Murray is recovering from a season-ending knee injury but is hard at work rehabbing with hopes of returning in the 2023 season. Mayfield, meanwhile, is starting anew in Tampa Bay, competing for a starting job.

Lamar Jackson (2016), new contract in hand, is back for his seventh season in Baltimore as one of the game’s most exciting players while Derrick Henry (2015) returns to the Titans, ready to resume his spot as one of the sport’s dominant runners.

Jameis Winston (2013) is back in New Orleans, now set to backup Derek Carr. The dean of Heisman winners in the NFL, Mark Ingram, is currently a free agent. If he doesn’t return to the gridiron, he could end up as an NFL commentator.

Itching for football, we looked ahead to the 2023 season and calendared 17 games in which Heisman winners are scheduled to face each other.

Mayfield’s Buccaneers have six dates against teams with Heisman winners, including a Week 3 date against Smith and Mariota’s Eagles.

Henry’s Titans have five games against Heisman winners, including a season-opener against New Orleans.

Young has five scheduled Heisman match-ups as a rookie, including a Week 2 date on Monday night Football.

The other scheduled primetime Heisman match-up features Burrow’s Bengals against Jackson’s Ravens on Thursday Night Football in Week 11.
