The American Century Championship has a tenured history as one of the top celebrity golf tournaments in the nation, going on 36 years, and there is often a heavy Heisman flavor to the field.
This year’s event, which kicks off today at Edgewood Tahoe Resort and runs through Saturday, is no different with four Heisman winners in the mix, including Marcus Allen, Charles Woodson, Tim Brown and Baker Mayfield.
Brown is paired in the first round with NFL stars Emmitt Smith and Patrick Peterson while Woodson is paired with MLB star Albert Pujols and actor Michael Pena.
Allen tees off with fellow NFL legend Jerome Bettis and current NFL full back Kyle Juszczyk. Mayfield will play with fellow NFL quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Josh Allen.
Also playing are a pair of Heisman runners-up in Trevor Lawrence and Larry Fitzgerald.
A year ago, Brown led the same quartet of Heisman-winning golfers with a tie for 16th. Allen tied for 56th in the uniquely scored event while Woodson was 67th and Mayfield 77th.
Brown got a boost, no doubt, thanks to a hole-in-one on the 143-yard 12th hole last year. The ace netted him eight points towards his score, but also won him a $200,000 boat for acing that particular hole. See the shot below.
For those curious, the remainder of the scoring features 10 points for a rare albatross, six points for an eagle, three for a birdie, 1 for a par, zero for a bogey and minus 2 points for a double bogey or worse.
Tennis great Mardy Fish won last year’s event with 83 points, four ahead of NHL star Joe Pavelski. NBA star Stephen Curry beat Fish in 2023 by two points while Brown also led Heisman participants.
Other Heisman winners to play in the event in the past five years include Reggie Bush, Robert Griffin III, Carson Palmer, Eddie George and Doug Flutie.
Peacock will air two hours of live first-round play from 4-6 p.m. ET on Friday. Saturday and Sunday coverage air on NBC and Peacock from 2:30 to 6 p.m.
