Dec. 11, 2004
Matt Leinart of the University of Southern California was selected as the 70th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award as the Outstanding College Football Player of the United States for 2004. William J. Dockery, of the Heisman Trophy Trust, which annually presents the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award, announced the selection of Leinart on Saturday evening, December 11th, on a nationally televised ESPN sports special live from the Hilton New York. The 6'5'', 225-pound Leinart becomes the sixth Trojan to win the Heisman Trophy, joining Mike Garrett (1965), O.J. Simpson (1968), Charles White (1979), Marcus Allen (1981), and Carson Palmer (2002). He is the 15th Junior and the 27th quarterback to receive the award.
Leinart, of Santa Ana, CA, completed 251 of 377 passes for 2,990 yards and 28 touchdowns, with only 6 interceptions. He was named the Pac-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year along with fellow Trojan and Heisman finalist, Reggie Bush, becoming only the second quarterback to win the honor twice. Under coach Pete Carroll, Leinart led the Trojans to a 12-0 record and an appearance in the January 4, 2004 Orange Bowl. He is currently second in school history with 66 touchdown passes trailing only 2002 Heisman Trophy Winner Carson Palmer.
Ballots were mailed to 870 media personnel across the nation plus 52 Heisman winners and one Suzuki fan ballot, for a total of 923 electors. Leinart polled 1,325 points to capture the award over Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma with 997 points and the 2003 Heisman Trophy Winner, Jason White of Oklahoma, with 957 points. The point total is reached by a system of three points for a first place vote, two for a second and one for a third. Matt Leinart will officially be honored at the 70th annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Award Dinner on Monday evening, December 13th at the Hilton New York.
