Heisman Winner Angelo Bertelli Dies At 77
In his 26-game college career, Bertelli completed 169 of 324 passes for 2,582 yards and 29 touchdowns and was considered a ball-handling wizard. His expertise with the ball was the key reason why legendary coach Frank Leahy decided to scrap the single wing that was in vogue at the time for the T-formation in 1942. Bertelli served in Iwo Jima and Guam, attaining the rank of captain in the Marine Corps, and then played professionally for a brief time with the Los Angeles Dons before a severe knee injury ended his career. Bertelli, who was elected to the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame in 1972, was the third oldest living Heisman Winner behind Jay Berwanger and Larry Kelley, the first two Heisman Winners.
Bertelli was raised in West Springfield, Mass., and operated a liquor store in Clifton for 48 years. He also was director of the North Jersey Automobile Association of America. "Angelo was always very humble and a person generous with his time to Notre Dame students and to the university, responding on so many occasions when, because of his celebrity, he was called upon," said Notre Dame Athletic Director Michael Wadsworth. "The Downtown Athletic Club (which awards the Heisman Trophy) and the Heisman Family have lost a true friend," said Rudy Riska, the Executive Director of the Heisman Memorial Trust. "Angelo always conducted himself as a class person, never demanding, always giving." Bertelli is survived by his wife, Gilda; two sons, Michael and Robert; two daughters, Lauren and Judith; and five grandsons. Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home in Clifton. A funeral mass was scheduled to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Clifton. Joe Carnicelli Downtown Athletic Club Public Relations/Marketing
