Walker Among 15 Named To College Football Hall Of Fame
New York, New York (13 May 1999) - Herschel Walker, who won the Heisman Trophy as a junior at the University of Georgia in 1982, is among 12 former players and three ex-coaches selected as the Hall of Fame. Walker and the 14 other inductees will be officially welcomed into the Hall of Fame at the National Football Foundation's annual dinner in New York this December, just after the Heisman Trophy Dinner. Walker became only the seventh junior to win the Heisman after leading Georgia to a national title and a 32-2 record in the three years he spent with the Bulldogs. He set an NCAA record for yardage in three seasons by rushing for 5,097 yards. Walker scored 50 touchdowns during his college career, averaged 159.3 yards a game and 5.3 yards per carry. Walker beat out Stanford quarterback John Elway, Southern Methodist running back Eric Dickerson and Michigan receiver Anthony Carter to win the 1982 Heisman Trophy.
As a freshman, he finished third behind South Carolina running back George Rogers and Pittsburgh defensive end Hugh Green and as a sophomore, Walker was second to Southern California running back Marcus Allen in the Heisman balloting.
Walker left Georgia after his junior season to sign with the new United States Football League's New Jersey Generals. He later went on to play in the National Football League with several clubs, primarily the Dallas Cowboys. Other former players in the 1999 group of Hall of Fame inductees include: Notre Dame defensive end Ross Browner; Arkansas receiver Chuck Dicus; Texas running back Chris Gilbert; Alabama guard John Hannah; UCLA tailback Billy Kilmer; Tennessee linebacker Steve Kiner; Iowa quarterback Chuck Hall; Virginia Tech defensive back Frank Loria; Virginia middle guard Joe Palumbo; Oklahoma running back Greg Pruitt; and California defensive lineman Ed White. The coaches selected were Jerry Claiborne (Virginia Tech, Maryland, Kentucky), Don Coryell (Whitter, San Diego State) and Jim Young (Arizona, Purdue, Army).
