Two Heisman Winners added to 2006 College Football Hall of Fame Class
May 18, 2006 The College Football Hall of Fame announced Tuesday two Heisman Trophy Winners among 13 former college greats who are part of the 2006 Division I-A Hall of Fame Class. Both the 1983 Heisman Winner, Mike Rozier of the University of Nebraska and the 1993 Heisman winner, Charlie Ward of Florida State University will be inducted at the 49th Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5, 2006, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. They will be officially enshrined at the Hall in South Bend, Ind., during ceremonies in the summer of 2007. Rozier captured the Heisman Trophy in 1983, following a record-setting senior campaign. Rozier rushed for 2,148 yards on 275 carries and scored a school-record 29 touchdowns. Rozier averaged 179 yards per game, while rushing for more than 100 yards in 11 straight games, including a career-best 285 yards against Kansas. His 2,148 yards is the fifth-highest total in NCAA history, and he was the second rusher in NCAA history to surpass 2,000 yards in a season. Rozier will become Nebraska's first inductee since fellow Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers was part of the 2000 class. Rozier and his wife live in Sicklerville, N.J. The brilliant and exciting signal-caller from Thomasville, Georgia, Charlie Ward was the first Seminole player to win the Heisman. From the first moment of the '93 season, the spotlight focused on Ward, who was considered to be the nation's premier quarterback and the prime candidate for the Heisman Trophy. Ward responded not only with many a marvelous performance at passing and running, but also with the kind of inspired leadership which is present in only the finest of quarterbacks. Widely regarded as the greatest player in FSU history, Ward set 19 school records including single-season touchdowns (27) and career total offense (6,636 yards). A 1993 co-captain, he passed for more than 5,700 career yards and ran for better than 850. Ward and his wife currently reside in Houston, TX. The 2006 College Football Hall of Fame Division I-A Class, also includes legendary coaches Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno. Bowden was the head coach of Ward as well as former Heisman Winner Chris Weinke. Paterno was head coach of 1973 Heisman Winner, John Cappelletti who was inducted into the hall in 1993. The addition of Ward and Rozier bring the total number of Heisman winners in the College Football Hall of Fame to forty nine.
In addition to Rozier and Ward, the following players are part of the 2006 Division I-A Hall of Fame Class: Bobby Anderson, RB, Colorado (1967-69); Bennie Blades, DB, Miami (1985-87); Carl Eller, T, Minnesota (1961-63); Steve Emtman, DL, Washington (1989-91); Thomas Everett, FS, Baylor (1983-86); Chad Hennings, DT, Air Force (1984-87); Chip Kell, OG, Tennessee (1968-70); Mike Phipps, QB, Purdue (1967-69); Jeff Siemon, LB, Stanford (1968-71); Bruce Smith, DT, Virginia Tech (1981-84); Emmitt Smith, RB, Florida (1987-89). |
